Among the visitors was the Richard Owen, then-Superintendent of Natural History at the British Museum, who purchased Koch's mastodon fossils for the Museum in 1844. The final stop of Koch's tour was London, where the mastodon was displayed in an exhibition hall in Piccadilly. Back then it was common for people to try to accommodate stories from the Bible,' Adrian says. 'Although it's easy to fall into the trap of mocking Koch for his invention, the truth is nobody really knew how this animal lived. He toured it all over North America and even crossed the Atlantic to Europe, which was a very costly undertaking at the time. Koch believed it was an underwater creature that used those big tusks as hooks to hang onto underwater branches.' 'He called it the Missouri Leviathan - referring to the biblical sea monster - and had some pretty interesting theories about the way it life. 'At the time some scientists in Europe had already encountered related kinds of animals and had drawn them with some accuracy, but Koch either didn't know about it or he didn't care,' says Adrian. He exaggerated the animal's size in every direction - adding several vertebrae and ribs, placing wood between vertebrae and installing the tusks so they emerged sideways. Uncovering a huge number of mastodon bones, Koch assembled a skeleton that was twice the size of a typical mastodon (which was in fact close in size to an Asian elephant). In 1840, when a farmer in Missouri, USA, found a number of large fossil bones on his property, Koch was quick to secure the rights to excavate. In the early nineteenth century, 'fossil showman' Albert Koch made a career out of exhibiting curiosities of the natural world. We now know a lot about how these animals lived and died - but it took years for the nineteenth-century scientific community to establish the facts of mastodon anatomy. This allowed them to walk on the soft, waterlogged ground beside ponds and lakes. Mastodons lived in pine forests and boggy areas covered by larch and spruce, feeding on twigs, leaves and water plants.Īdapted for life at the water's edge, they had broad feet and stubby, wide-splayed toe bones. The American mastodon was a large land mammal that roamed North America throughout the Ice Age until as recently as 13,000 years ago. He created a large and monstrous beast from the bones of the extinct mammals, and his bizarre creation went on to astonish audiences around the world, from Mississippi to London.Īdrian Lister explains how this specimen went from touring spectacle to Museum exhibit.

We have created an entire step-by-step guide on what to do to complete the Easter Egg in Shadows of Evil, but for those that would rather refer to a video, the YouTube channel ActionPacked has prepared a video guide detailing the Zombies Easter Egg.When Albert Koch uncovered a graveyard of fossilised mastodons in 1840, he believed he had discovered nothing less than a mythical sea monster.

The first item needed for the Easter Egg is the Summoning Key, and it is found on Easy Street (the starting area), on the back of a truck in a box with chains all over it.

To break this box, use the nearby purple torch to transform into the "Beast", a tentacled monster that has three abilities. Pull the left trigger to shoot electricity, which is used to charge switches on the map, and pull the right trigger to grapple onto eagle head statues. Click in the right analog stick to perform a melee attack, which can be used to break the box on the back of the truck, as well as other boxes and similar-looking doors. Objects that the Beast can interact with typically glow with an orange light, so keep that in mind. Smash the box on the back of the truck with a melee attack and collect the Summoning Key, which is in the shape of an orb. The next goal is to collect four sacrificial items and perform the rituals associated with them. Keep in mind that the items and the rituals can be done in any order. Furthermore, this entire Easter Egg can be completed co-op or solo, a recent and appreciated Zombies trend that started with Exo Zombies in Advanced Warfare. The Lawyer's Pen is right outside the Easy Street gates, in an area of the map known as Junction, which has a crane in its center. Transform into the Beast again and charge the switch on the side of the crane to power it up. This will cause the crane to rotate and drop a crate to the ground. Go over to where the crate fell to find the Lawyer's Pen amidst the remains. Picking up the sacrificial items will cause floating demon-like enemies to spawn called Keepers, but they're easily killed. They're much less intimidating than zombie mannequins, that's for sure. There is now a new set of stairs that allow access into the Ruby Rabbit as a human. Head inside and climb the stairs to the top to begin the Detective's Badge ritual.
