So I am seriously considering dumping the Hybrid for a cheap road bike as a commuter.

I would only have the V brakes left as a memory of the hybrid, but the LBS did adviced me that you were looking for troubles if you would run sti drop bar brake handles with V brakes I tought of "deshybridizing" my hybrid by changing it into a road bike or something really similar, by putting drop bars on it and sti shifters. So the hybrid itself is not that bad, It is the bloody flat bar that make you take all the wind. I fitted my hybrid with a clip on aero bar (yep I know, it looks and sounds weird), and I actually commute faster than with the road bike, by about 5%, but the position is damn unconfortable past the 50km mark. I rode my road bike to work and of course it is faster than with the hybrid, even "doped" with road tyres, by 10%. I run road tyres on it (maxxis detonator, hors categorie or michelin pro2 race) so the "tyre slowing you down" problem is solved. The cassette is uses a 32 at the back considering that you also have a granny ring of 30 at the front!- but if I really wanted I would bite the bullet and change it for something more road like I ride an hybrid to commute (90km round trip) and I would like it dead indeed, compared to the road bike you take a lot of wind and that slow you down a lot. I hope they remain in some form or other. I have a number of bikes, including a classic steel Japanese drop bar tourer, a drop bar sports bike, a drop bar alu racer and of course a Giant Perigee hybrid with a front fork lockout and its my gentlemans Sunday arvo casual ride bike. I bet they had a laugh at us Aussies turning up in bike shorts, helmets etc. Bicycle Type: Hybrid: MSRP USD (new) 400.00. The older generation (not that theres anything wrong with that) also seem to have cycled pretty much all of their lives. There is much more utilitarian usage of bikes there. They use bicycles (as a general rule anyway) in a completely different way to us. They love their hub gears (although derailleurs are very common too), light generators, mudguards, lazy angles.

In Europe they have a completely different mindset about cycling.
